Let’s dive in.

What is Rev.com

Rev.com is a US-based company that provides work-at-home jobs to people across the globe. The company is recognized globally for the opportunities that it offers for the work-at-home job seekers on a freelance basis.

Founded in 2010 by Jason Chicola and Josh Breinlinger, Rev.com was established to assist companies like Comcast and PBS by providing services in the field of translation and transcription.

Rev.com was formerly known as FoxTranscribe and in 2012, it was renamed as Rev.com.

Rev is a very reputed company and over years it has managed to create a huge market place in the field of speech-to-text jobs. The company is quite approved in every field it works on and it has been featured on various websites like TechCrunch and the Wall Street Journal.

The company has also been awarded the PC Mg’s Editor’s Choice Award for its excellent contributions in the field of transcription.

The motto of the company is to create better work-at-home jobs and to ensure the satisfaction of both its customers and freelancers.

Is Rev.com Legit or Scam?

Rev.com is indeed legit. Many accuse the company to be a scam but in fact, it is very much legit and is one of the most trusted companies.

You must be wondering about my confidence in the legitimacy of Rev.com, right?

Well, I can prove it.

Rev has very good connections with renowned brands like Forbes, Real Simple, The New York Times, etc. No one, especially high-profile companies won’t like to have an association with something scam.

It is the biggest evidence that Rev.com is not running anything scam and in fact, offers real jobs.

Again, it is to be remembered that the company was a recipient of the PC Mg’s Editor’s Choice Award, that too for its excellent work in the field of transcription.

Another important thing to note is that any company involved in the scam would neither have a social media account nor would provide their exact address.

Well, that’s not the case with Rev.com.

Rev has a social media account (Facebook) with millions of followers. Also, the company provides every information about them, including their address and phone numbers.

These pieces of evidence are more than enough to prove that Rev is legit and is genuine to its customers.

A whole load of confusion is due to the high number of negative reviews. Indeed, there are many things like a low pay rate to be upset upon, but that doesn’t make the company a scam.

Rev.com is not doing anything scam; it is legit.

What are the jobs available at Rev?

Rev is one of the most approved companies that provide transcribing jobs

Along with transcribing jobs, it also offers freelance jobs like a translator, captioner, and subtitler.

  • Being a transcriptionist, your job will be to convert spoken words in the videos to text documents. It may sound simple, but it is a job that needs good listening and typing skills.
  • Working as a translator for Rev, you will be translating i.e., converting the text documents or the spoken words in the video from one language to another. Applicants with proficiency in more than one language are generally preferred for this position. So, if you are a multi-lingual person, then your chances of getting selected are pretty high.
  • As the name suggests, working as a captioner, you will have to add appropriate captions for the videos provided by the company. Excellent fluency in English is expected from the applicants.
  • Finally, as a subtitler, your job will be to provide subtitles or text for the videos provided.

These are the 4 major positions offered by Rev.com. All the positions demand good linguistic skills (mainly English) and excellent typing skills.

Once you get shortlisted, you will undergo a Rev Transcription Test only after which you will be selected for the job.

Rev has introduced a classification system in which you will be ranked on the basis of your performance. There are 3 levels- Rookie, Reverr, and Reverr+.

  • Rookie is the initial level of Rev Transcription. As a Rookie, you will only be assigned short period works (generally 25 to 30 minutes).
  • You will be promoted as a Reverr once you complete 60 minutes of works (also depends on your performance). As a Reverr, you will earn about 25% extra of what you earned as a Rookie.
The standard of works will increase as you get promoted to higher levels.
  • The highest level as per the Rev transcription System is Reverr+. You will get to the level of Reverr+ only if you work consistently for 1200 minutes with on-time submissions.

As a Reverr+, you can enjoy all the benefits of a Reverr as well as have prior access to all the available tasks. Also, your earnings will double.

Before applying to Rev, make sure that you read the entire job descriptions thoroughly. If you find yourself apt for the job, then it is time to apply.

How do you apply at Rev?

The applications to Rev are open to all irrespective of your geographical location

The company hires both online and offline freelancers for transcribing jobs. Owing to its huge popularity, the company follows a strict application procedure.

The whole application process may last about one hour and it includes general application procedures and a selection test.

Rev conducts a 3 round selection process in which you will undergo tests to check your typing, grammar, and transcribing skills.

  • The first round checks your typing skills. Excellent typing skills are required to clear this level. Here, you will be allotted 60 seconds within which you have to type as many texts as you can. You will be judged upon the accuracy and speed of your typing. Once you clear this round, you will move to the second round i.e., the grammar test.
  • The second round is a grammar test in which you will be given audio or video which you will have to write down without any grammatical errors. Good grammar and punctuation skills are the major requirements to clear this round.
  • The final and the most important round in the selection process is the transcription test. In this round, you will be given audio with two speakers.

Your job will be to distinguish between the two speakers and to write down what each of them is speaking.

The main advantage of this round is that there is no deadline. However, it is better to complete the test as soon as possible since over time the level of competition increases.

After the submission of the application form, in 1 to 2 business days, you will receive an e-mail from Rev informing whether you passed the test or not.

Don’t worry if you failed because you can try again after 45 days.

All these application procedures may seem difficult and complicated. But don’t feel disheartened if you couldn’t make it up in the first try. If you are so keen on the job, keep on trying.

Requirements

Not much is required for the job.

All you need to get started is a good computer with updated software, headphones, and a strong internet connection (foot pedals are often recommended).

Transcribing jobs offered by Rev doesn’t demand any special qualification or degree. However, it does demand good typing skills and fluency in English.

Since the job is all about videos and its transcriptions, excellent listening skills are expected from the applicants.

It is very important to have good listening skills because sometimes the videos or audios assigned may be of poor quality or it may include many speakers.

So, the applicant must be able to correctly identify the speakers as well as the words they speak and must make the transcript perfect.

As mentioned earlier, good typing skills are mandatory for all the jobs offered by Rev.

You are expected to type 50 to 75 words per minute.

This is a very important requirement as sometimes you get paid based on the number of words you could type per minute. That is why your typing skills are tested during the application process.

Yet another important requirement for working for Rev is proficiency in English.

The company will only select those candidates who have mastery in written as well as spoken English.

People having multi-lingual skills (English and some other language) are highly preferred for the position of a translator.

Aforesaid three skills- listening, typing, and grammar, are of at most importance.

The company, in order to find the most efficient applicant, conducts a 3 round test series that tests these three skills. Only those who clear these rounds are hired.

The jobs offered by Rev also demand patience and time. So, the job will suit those who aren’t easily frustrated and those who have plenty of time up their sleeve.

Basic computer literacy along with good typing and listening skills are the basic requirements to work for Rev.

Along with these skills, any additional skills that you possess might help you stand out in the crowd and may increase your chances of getting selected.

Reviews and Complaints

In spite of its numerous merits, the internet is flooded with negative reviews on Rev.

While some accuse it of being a scam, some claim it as a waste of time.

It is very unfortunate that most of the negative reviews are posted by the past employees of Rev, who worked there for months and years.

Every company has its own merits and demerits; Rev is not an exception. There are many things about Rev that can make you upset like low pay rates, inconsistent works, etc.

However, it is to be noted that the pay rates may seem low but it is not out of line with other transcription companies.

The jobs offered by Rev revolve around transcriptions. As I said earlier, transcribing a job requires excellent typing skills.

It is your skills and efficiency that lead you to higher levels. These skills and accuracy cannot be achieved overnight; it requires effort and most importantly prior experience in the field.

Most of the applicants don’t understand this and end up complaining about low pay.

Positive or negative reviews, it all depends upon your efficiency. You get disappointed when you don’t get what you expected.

So, before you apply, read the entire job descriptions and apply only if you’re comfortable with the job.

Don’t get confused with the negative reviews, Rev is indeed a good company to work with. It is one of the few companies that allow you to choose your projects and the working hours.

If you are looking for some extra bucks to support your monthly income, then Rev is the best option.

Pay rates

There is no exact pay rate in Rev. You are paid based on what you do and your overall performance in it.

  • The job of transcriptionist or captioner can earn you $0.4 to $0.75 per audio or video minute
  • While subtitlers are paid $3 to $7 per minute.
  • Being a translator, you can earn about $0.4 to $0.5 per word.

The pay may not seem a lot but it will definitely prove to be an excellent side income. The pay is decent and is in line with other companies working in the same field.

Do note that everyone working for Rev are not paid equally. The amount you earn may depend upon factors like:

  • Accuracy and speed of typing
  • The amount of time is taken to complete the work
  • Quality of the work produced

Aforesaid are the main variables that determine how much you earn being a transcriber for Rev. Other than these three, there are many other factors that can determine your pay rates like the quality of the video or audio assigned and the number of jobs available at a particular time period.

Most of the negative reviews flooding on the internet is due to the low pay rates.

But those who complain about the low pay must remember that you get to work in the comfort of your house and you have the freedom to choose the number of hours that you want to work for.

Indeed, the pay rate is not a lot, in spite of that, Rev is an excellent side hustle.

Pros and Cons

Rev.com is indeed one of the best platforms for transcribing jobs.

In spite of the numerous reviews against them, the company has proved to be a strong competitor in every field it works on and is a very much approved option among the work-at-home job seekers across the globe.

Like any other company, Rev also has its own pros and cons.

What I like

  1. Rev hires freelancers from all over the world. So, irrespective of where you live, you can apply for the transcribing jobs that it offers.
  2. The working hours are quite flexible and you can choose how many hours you want to work for. Again, the time allotted for each task may range from 10 to 12 hours.
So, you can complete the work without compromising your other interests.
  3. Another major perk of working for Rev is that the company allows you to choose your work. You can listen to the audios beforehand and have the freedom to choose the task as per your comfort.
If you feel uncomfortable with the task after taking it, you can drop it within an hour.
  4. Last but not the least, Rev hires applicants as both in-house employees and work-at-home freelancers.

What I don’t like

  1. The major drawback of Rev is the low pay rate that it offers. The job would worth only as a side hustler and cannot be replaced as a full-time job due to its low pay.
  2. Limited availability of jobs is yet another drawback of Rev. It only hires people for 4 positions, that too for a comparatively low pay rate.
  3. The number of tasks provided is also inconsistent in nature. You will have a variety of tasks one day but sometimes you may remain jobless for weeks.
  4. The quality of audios and videos may vary considerably based on the level you are working on. Those working in the highest level i.e., Reverr+ get access to the tasks first, and thus those in the preliminary level i.e., Rookie are left with poor quality audios.
